MATEICULATION PARTIAL PASSL
(To the Editor.)
_ Sir,—The remarks of Mr. H. Valentine, at tho meeting of the Society of Accotmtants, come at a very opportune time. He has advocated that a partial pass in the Matriculation Examination bo availalbe to students. Tho school leaving certificate has been instituted, and only those who intend to onter the university will sit for the Matriculation Examination. Of these, a great majority -will be students who have prepared at the various secondary colleges. But tho_ remaining few arc those Who have their regular work to do during the day, with the result that they are handicapped by lack of time for proper study, and the taking of the examination is rendered doubly hard. Cannot something bo done to lighten their task! .-...■ . .
Many have been disheartened by thoir failure to pass the4equired five subjects at one sitting and have given up trying. To give an instance:* A certain youth who had his office work to do in the daytime sat for the Matricu-. lation Examination and came out with an average, of 56 per cent, on his five subjects. Yet he was not credited with a pass because his French marks were under 30 per cent. This youth has been thoroughly disheartened at the task of having to sit again in all those subjects in which ho passed so well, and has abandoned study altogether. Could not a partial pass "bo granted to all such with perhaps a stipulation that they would become registered students at on© or other of the universities within a certain time?—l am, etc., ; ■■"■ '■/.■-/.•., •.■■•■ ". ■■ ■;• M.B.P.
