EDUCATIONAL INVESTIGATION

Dr. C. E. Beeby, who is at present Acting Professor of Philosophy at Canterbury University College,' has been appointed executive officer ot the New Zealand Council for Educational • Eesearch. Dr. Beeby, who holds'the M:A; degree (N.Z.) with first-class honours in philosophy and the Ph.D. of' Manchester, has had a wide experience of the methods of research in psychology and education not only in New Zealand, but also in Great Britain and the United States.. ~

The Council for Educational .Research was set up by the Carnegie Corporation of New York and is being financed by that body for five ' years. The corporation took this action after it was satisfied' by the report of,-a small committee that there was a wide field for educational research "in thia country, and that the .movement •would, have the hearty co-operation ,of the Education Department, the University, education boards, secondary schools, and other educational bodies.

Applications for the posts of executive officer, who' will ■ direct the researches approved by the council,; were received from, England, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand, and, in view of the importance of the position, a very full and careful inquirywas necessary before an appointment could be made. .... ,

In August, Dr. Beeby will visit Australia to make Contact with the officers of a similar body there, and to inquire into its organisation and methods. On his return the council will begin to establish a local branch.of the movement in each university- centre. Dr. Beeby will not be free from his dutieaat Canterbury College till November, but in the meantime. a small sub-com-mittee is preparing a draft of a plan for research, and it is "expected that active operations will begin early in the coming year. Dr. Beeby, will be stationed in Wellington. .
