ART FOR THE DOMINIONS
| When speaking at the Royal I Academy banquet the Prince of | Wales stated .that the trustees of the ; National Gallery, of whom he is one, are considering the advisability of [lending famous English pictures overseas. His Royal Highness "said that- there was some controversy on the subject, but he expressed his 'view that both the Dominions and | foreign countries • should have an opportunity of seeing the best work of English artists. The Prince's support of this proposal will be most gratifying in New Zealand, where Lord Bledisloe has been keenly interested an promoting an artistic union between the Dominion and the Motherland. His Excellency has sugigested two ways,in which this may be donel—by loan exhibitions of British pictures and by encouraging leading New Zealand artists to send their work lo Burlington House. Lord Bledisloe mentioned loan exhibitions particularly when outlining recently the work that might be done by the New Zealand National Art Gallery. Already travelling collections are arranged in the United Kingdom and private organisers have brought several' notable collections to New Zealand. But there are difficulties to be overcome in arranging that the greatest works of art which are the property of the nation shall. be ■ allowed to leave Great Britain. We may hope, however, 'that the interest of the Prince of Wales -will help to remove these difficulties. His Excellency's other wish 1 -—to see New Zealand represented in the Royal Academy exhibition—has heen fulfilled in the acceptance at this year's academy of pictures from | Mr. Charles Golditf and Mrs. M. E. JR. Tripe. His Excellency induced Mr. Goldie to send three of his Maori portraits, and all have been accepted. It may be hoped that this will be i followed in due course by the granting by the Royal Academy, as Lord | Bledisloe has suggested, of a distinction, equal to that of R.A., to Dominion artists whose work is of I outstanding, merit.
