HARD-COURT FINALS

PERRY BEATS CRAWFORD

AUSTRALIAN DOUBLES

LONDON, May 5.

In the final of the British hard-court singles .championship, Perry defeated Crawford, 8-6, 7-5, 6-1.

The courts were slow after heavy rain, and a boisterous.wind prevailed. Perry again proved his superiority over Crawford; Both drove beautifully on tho backhand. Perry was confident and extremely difficult to pass at the.net, reaching everything on cither wing, and smashing'Crawford's tosses in deadly fashion. Crawford scored with good volleys, but Perry was surer, winning outright with the".first volley nearly svery time he approached the net.

Results are:— Men's Singles.—Final: Perry defeated Crawford, 8-6, 7-5, 6-1. Women's . Singles.—Final:' Miss Bound defeated Miss Soriven, 6-2, 2*6 S-G. . ' '

Men's Doubles.—Final: Crawford and MeGrath defeated Turnbull and Quist. 3-6,-6-4, 6-2, 6-3."

Women's,Doubles.—Mrs. C4odfrce and Miss Noel beat Misses Dearman and Lyle, 5-7/ 6-4, 6-3.

Mixed Doubles.—Final: Miki and Miss Bound defeated Malfroy and Miss Stammers, 8-6, 6-8,, 6-2. The Australian Press Association representative, commenting on tho doubles final, says there, would, have been- more consolation, from- the allAustralian final if Turnbull and Quist had not had to scratch to beat'the Frenchmen in the semi-final. The problem of Australia's Davis Cup doubles pair, consequently remains unsolved. . Although admittedly Turnbull has not readied his best, it 5s not a •comforting prospect to have Crawford and McGrath carrying both doubles and singles.
