Boothby's (C.) question as to what measures were being taken to cheek the increasing imports of foreign meat, Major Elliot (Minister of Agriculture) virtually repeated an earlier reply.. Mr. Boothby: When will you be in a position to introduce the most effective remedy, tariff on ••all imported meat? ' ' . : Major Elliot: I cannot enter upon a controversy througlt the medium of. a question. Is Mr.: Boothby of opinion that a tariff should apply to' the. Dominions or ; only to, foreign meat? "j
On March 19 in.,the. House of Commons, replying to ..Mr. Shaw's and. Mr. Lambert's queries in relation to increased imports of ■ Dominion, frozen beef and butter and.cheese, and what, steps were, being taken to protect the Home producer, the Minister of Agriculture (Mr. Walter Elliot) said that the larger ; supplies of Empire beef, at present were not subject: to regulation. Foreigners hitherto had adhered closely to their, allocation. The Government was in' continuous communication with, the Dominions regarding the whole agricultural position. When the matter was reconsidered, it would be quite unprejudiced except as far as regarded ithe relations entered into. .When, the agreements ended the Home producers would have first preference. . He thought the Dominions would be in agreement with that, ,
