A CURIOUS CASE
An actioji which was reported to be the first of its kind in Britain was heard*at the Manchester County Court a few weeks ago when the Manchester Corporation successfully claimed 5s 3d from John Cheetham, an undertaker. It was stated that the corporation imposed a fine of 5s 3d if a funeral party arrived late at any of the chapels in the Southern ■Cemetery. Cheetham's party was at the cemetery office at 2.28, but the chapel was'a quarter of a mile away, and when it was reached the doors had been closed. Cheetham declined to pay because he was at the cemetery before 2.30, but Judge Leigh decided that lie had broken a regulation, aiid-was/.therefore^liable.,'. '■;■ :;
