1935 BAND CONTEST

NELSON INTERESTED

CANVASS FOR, GUARANTEES

(Special to the "Evening Post.") NELSON, March 27. • A public meeting of citizens intorosted,in securing4he 1935 New Zealand Brass Bands' Association contest for Nelson was presided over by. the Mayor (Mr. W. J. Moffatt)..

It was explained that a sum of £190 was still held in trust from the profits of the last contest held in Nelson in 1921. The sum was originally £308, but it had been reduced to its present figure by grants towards sending a Nelsou band to recent contests. A nunibe* of speakers were opposed to this fund being drawn on. in connection with next year's contest. under tho present rules' governing tho distribution of profits. The clause in tho rule's concerning the payment of £50 to the association for the permit to hold the contest came in for strong criticism."

The Hon. W. W. Snodgrass, chairman of the citizens' committee which organised tho 1921 contest,' strongly recommended that every effort should' be made to secure the fixture, but he considered tho association should modify its terms. "It should not be a case of the association .saying 'heads I win, tails you lose,'" ho'said.

Mr. W. Eeed pointed out that Timaru had decided to accept the association's terms, and so tho contest would be held either in Nelson or In Timaru if Christehurch refused to \' accept the terms.

Mr. F. W. Huggins criticised the payment of £50 for, the privilege of holding the■ contest; if it was a guarantee it might be air right.

■ The Mayor said that, the £50 was a drastic condition, and' that; was apparently what Christchurch had objected to. , . '■ •■.-.'■ .'"■■;.

Several speakers were keen to have the contest, even ..under the conditions offered by the association.

The meeting appointed a committee, consisting of Messrs. J. Newman, W. Liddle, H. Pickwell, N. Kerr, and A. H. Crawley, to secure guarantees sufficient.to coyer the expenses of the contest. However, it was not decided definitely that the meeting approved of the contest being held in Nelson. An early decision will be reached on that point following on the necessary guarantee being : assured. ■■.--'
