"RETROGRADE STEP"

TELEGRAPH CHARGES

STOCK EXCHANGE PROTEST

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHKISTCHURCH, This Day. Criticism, of the> principle of charging for telegrams according to distance was contained in a resolution adopted by the Christchurch Stock Exchange. The resolution was as follows:—"The Christchurch Stock Exchange welcomes the new basis of the charge for urgent telegrams so far as it removes existing excessivo loading, but strongly protests against the differentiation of charges for ordinary messages according to distance. Such a system appears to be a distinctly retrograde step for a scattered country like Nejv Zealand. Telegrams, like letters, should be handled at a uniform Tate over all parts of the Dominion. In our. opinion the new charges will represent' a substantial increase in telegraph charges (up to as much a 5.25 per cent, in many cases), and such an increase is an unjustifiable impost on all sections of the community."
