STATUE OF LIBERTY
Several thousands of pounds are tp be spent on the preservation of' trrt Statue of Liberty at the entrance to New York Harbour.' This statue was presented, to America' by the French nation, and was built to the designs of Mi Bartholdi. It stands 105 ft high, the extreme height from.tlie feet to the upper ' end- of, the torch "being 137 ft 9bi. The statue is on'a granite pedestal; 83ft high. A person 6ft'high standing on the lips'of the' statue .can only reach to the eyebrow, and it is possible for a man to pass through the tip of the nose, while the eyes measure 6ft from corner to^cprner. The statue is* built on-Bedloe's Island in Neiv York-Bay, one and a .quarter miles from the Battery or mainland of New York t City, and the electric torch held*-806ft 'atfoveTthV water, -Is said to .be, the highest beajion in the,world;!*.
