ISLAND BAY DISTRESS

CANVASS FOR FUNDS

A public meeting was held on Sunday night at the Empire Theatre, Island Bay, under the auspices of the Inter-Church Relief Committee and associated* local organisations. Mr. C. B. McDougall was in the chair.

The speaker, Mr. O. J. Howarth, stated that it. was expected many calls would be made on the relief committee during the whiter, l'elief pay ,was not sufficient to maintain a family over a lengthy period. Many of the 130 relief • workers in the Island Bay district had-been on relief for a long time, and their position was. desperate. , As the. necessary money jforadequate relief was hot available from' the "Mayor's Fund, it was necessary to make a local effort to raise the necessary funds. He gave instances of various distressing cases "that had recently come under the notice of the relief committee, and stated that 500 weekly contributions of sixpence each would enable much-needed assistance to be given. '

At the conclusion of the address a unanimous resolution was passed in favour of a house-to-hotise canvass of the district to solicit regular weekly contributions to the work of the committee, the world to be put in hand without delay. A number of those present at the meeting promised weekly payments.
