HORTICULTURE
A meeting of the Wellington South Horticultural Society was held recently. Mr. A. W. McGregor presided. The report on tile summer show was presented by the hon. secretary (Mrs. McLean). This indicated that the display was quite up to the usual high standard horticulturally, but that the entries were a trifle less in the general sections. The children's exhibits were, however, quite a feature of the show. The recent long spell of dry weather had materially affected both flowers and vegetables. The attendance of the public was not good for the first time in the history of the summer show. Special mention was made of the services rendered by the judges, stewards, and the orchestra, and a hearty vote of thanks was passed unanimously to all who assisted in any way to make the show a success.
The hon treasurer (Mr. Salmon) reported that.the receipts were less than formerly, resulting in a slight loss. The necessary preliminary arrangements were made for the autumn show to be held on Tuesday, April 24. The main feature of this event is usually chrysanthemums, and those 'rho cultivate these seasonable flowers are usually numerous. Judges were appointed and other matters in connection therewith received consideration.
The monthly floral competition resulted in the first award to Mrs. McLean.
