RIFLE SHOOTING
PETONE CLUB
Owing to wet weather there was no shooting at Trentham on Saturday, but members of. the Petone Rifle Club assembled at a short function to bid farewell to the president of the club, Mr. W.. J. Mclver, who intends leaving for Australia in the near future to take up his residence there.
Deputy-President W. M. Jackson presided, and stated how sorry members of the club were to lose such a prominent rifle shot and popular president. Mr. McIver had set a wonderful standard himself, and the club had certainly been prosperous under his control.
Deputy-President R. E. Flaws said he was sure all members were distinctly sorry to lose Mr. Melver, who had figured so prominently in the activities of the club for several years, and especially when he won the New Zealand Championship Belt in 1931. A feature of the Petone Club's activities at the various N.R.A. meetings for the past ten years had been the wonderful team shooting, and as a member of the winning team on so many occasions, their president had helped to keep the club in the position in which it stood today as one of the leading clubs in New Zealand.' On behalf of the club he presented Mr. Melver with a memento of the members' esteem.
In reply, Mr. Melver said it was indeed difficult to say goodbye to so many friends, and he certainly regretted leaving the club, where such a fine spirit of comradeship existed. He stated that he had felt very proud to be a member of the Petone Club, and expressed his wish that members should continue to keep their club to the fore at future association meetings. He expressed his thanks for the kind gift.
The Petone Club will fire over the 300 and 600 yds ranges next Saturday, the competition counting for the short range handicap and Longfield handicap'series.
