The appointment, of Mrs. Knox Gilmer, of Wellington, as Government nominee on the Wellington College Board of Governors, in succession to the late Mrs. E. W. Kane, was announced today by the Minister, of Education (the Hon. B;-Masters).-,- ■-■; h^'h;^-:--'-Z

Mrs: Knox Gihner is the widow of the lato Mr. Knox Gilmer, a dentist, of "Wellington. She is tho seventh, daughter of the late Bt. Hon. R. J. Seddon and Mrs. Seddon. Mrs. ',. Knox Gilmer was born in Kumara, Westland, where she was educated, at the State School, and on her. family coining to live in Wellington in 1893 she became a pupil at the Wellington1 Girls' -High School (now the Wellington Girls' 1 College). Both in Kumara and 'at the Wellington Girls' High School sho won prizes for history, geography,', mathematics; and general She twice passed the civil service examinations. , Mrs. Gilmor is one of the best'known women in Wellington, where her work for charitable organisations has been a feature; of the life of the city 'for many years. The success of the famous Coster Ball which, she and Mrs. W. E. Herbert organised for the Wellington City Mission will long be remembered. Horticulture in Wellington owes "a ' lot to her zeal and enthusiasm. As president of the Wellington Horticultural Society she has infused the greatest possible interest in gardening as , evidenced by the signal success 'of the series of shows under her presidency and. the popularity of the flower circles which she has inspired. Mrs. Knox Gilmer is also a member of the National Rose Society'(England) and'tho Ehododehdron Association (England) and a member of the executive of the Institute of Horticulture (New Zealand). She is also a member of the National Daffodil Society. Music; too, hasclaimed her support, and as vice-presi-dent of the Wellington Symphony Orchestra she has helped materially to create an interest in music and to maintain the orchestra at a high standard even in these days of mechanical and wireless musical concerts.'She is a life member of the Victoria League, a member of the Navy League, a member of the executive of , the 'Now Zealand Native. Bird Protection ; Soeiety, and a member, of.' the New Zealand Forestry League! She'was one of the original members of the Karori Golf Club, and is also a member of the Miramar Club. She is a member of both, the Pioneer, and the Wellington Women Js Clubs, and the Wellington Art Society. Mrs. Gilmer has travelled extensively, but her most interesting trip, was when she accompanied her father to the South African battlefields and attended with her parents at the Coronation of King Edward VII. She will bring to the Board of Governors a thorough knowledge' of State education, a sound business trai* ing, and a sympathetic understanding of the requirements of the youth of. today. •■-■.•■
