GENERAL" RAIN LIKELY

A cold southerly change is expected to spread: over '■ the Dominion. during the next 24' hours, according to, the forecast based on observations made at 9.o'clock this.morning, and rain is likely in most districts. The weather will continue to be cloudy to overcast until the change takes place, and northwesterly winds will be experienced from Canterbury northwards,. until the southerlies from south of that district replace them. The southerly winds will generally be moderate to strong. During the weekend, owing- to a series of slight westerly . depressions passing m the south, the weather was rather unsettled in most of the western districts, scattered rain occurring in those parts. On the, West Coast.of the South Island some falls of over 1 inch, were experienced last night, the highest total reported being 159 points at Westport and 207 points at Puysegur Point. The eastern provinces, however, continned to ..have fair to cloudy and warm weather. Moderate to strong north to west' winds 'have, prevailed, reaching gale force in places about and south of Cook Strait. ■-.;-.■ ■'■■ At Auckland the weather was fine on Saturday with a light north-easterly wind prevailing. Some light showers fell early yesterday, but: the day was mostly fair to cloudy with a moderate to fresh north-easterly wind. Wellington had dull weather on both days with a strong north-westerly wind. The wind was particularly boisterous during yesterday morning and last night, the maximum gust,, of 61 m.p.h., occurring at 10.25 a.m. ' Christehurch experienced mild and fair to cloudy weather with a moderate northerly wind. . Ih Dunedin on Saturday it was fine in the morning, but some light rain fell in the afternoon and night. Yesterday was a dull day, and showers fell during the afternoon. There was little wind. ,
