MARKETING CHEESE

SOUTHLAND PROPOSAL

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) j INVEBCARGILL, March 23. At a meeting of dairy factory directors here today a scheme which may have far-reaching effects on the dairy industry in Southland was outlined. Briefly, it is that Southland cheese, claimed to be the best produced in the Dominion, should be sold under a distinctive brand by one Tooley Street firm, who will handle no other New Zealand cheese. Mr. C. S. Mackay, the- firm's representative here, who presided, said that if the cheese factories of Southland would give support for a scheme by which their produce would be marketed under its own brand he would proceed to England and assist his firm (MacPherson, Train, and Co.) in selling Southland cheese. The scheme was fully outlined to those present by means of a gramophone record made in London by Mr. T. MacPherson, senior partner of tho firm. Mr. John Gilkison. said'that Southland produced today the finest meat and the finest'dairy produce in the Dominion. It was a matter of serious concern, that Southland cheese should in the Home market be grouped with { all other cheese -produced in New Zealand. "Until you get your cheese branded Southland and : marketed as Southland," said Mr. Gilkison, "you will lose that premium of 2s 6d a hundredweight to which you are entitled."
