THROWN FROM LAUNCH
YOUNG MAN DROWNED
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 25. Eay Lawry, aged 25, single, a resident of New Brighton, was drowned at Sumner this afternoon when the fishing launch Moana swung broadside to the sea while crossing the bar. i A heavy breaking sea with a strong ebb tide rip made navigation of the bar difficult, but the launch was a bis high-powered boat. The party had crossed most 6f the troubled water of the bar, safely coming into the estuary, when a heavy breaking wave struck -the boat, shot it forward, and threw all the men into the water. Two clambered on to the launch almost immediately, but four were*left struggling in the water. Of these, G. Weastall and Lawry were in difficulties. .Weastall was rescued by Thackwell, another member of the crew, who threw offl- his gumboots and oilskins and dived into the rou<*h sea. Weastall was lifted out exhausted. The boat meanwhile had been caught in the current and rapidly drifted seaward. Mr. Thackwell was unable to reach Lawry.^An attempt was made by T. Climie from the shore to save the drowning man, but he had disappeared and sank before Mr. Climie could reach him.
