EASTER SHOW

OPENING DAY

VARIETY OF DISPLAYS

Tho Wellington Easter Show and Industrial Exhibition was opened in the Winter Show Buildings at 3 p.m.: today by the Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. Hislop). The Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. J. A. Young) also addressed those present. The president of tho Show Association (Mr. C. J. B. Norwood) introduced the speakers.

A tremendous amount of work has been done in the last two days, and the show is well ahead compared with previous years. The doors were opened to the public at 2 p.m., and -a largo crowd soon thronged the building. Visitors were impressed by the wonderful range of New Zealand-made goods. Many processes of manufacture are to be seen. Several of the exhibits are particularly well arranged, and they were the subject of much commendation. An industrial exhibition in the main, the show has gradually drawn in other interests until now its educative value is enormous.

The improved lay-out was much appreciated, and the rock garden and tearoom evoked many expressions of pleasure. A fine display provided by the nurserymen and florists helps to beautify the surroundings. On the entertainment side patrons will find much to interest them. There will be acrobatic and balancing acts, gymnastic displays, tug-of-war, dancing, and the inter-house girls' marching competition. The latter event will be one of the main attractions tonight. In addition there is a variety of sideshows, which are always a source of pleasure to visitors. DISPLAYS OF WORK. After a lapse of a year, the Education Board is interesting itself again in the school exhibit classes, and the work of the pupils generally is well represented, some of the exhibits being of a very high standard. Stalls that will appeal are devoted to excellent work by disabled soldiers, and to carpentry and other work by secondary-school pupils. A fine collection of models, including trains and aeroplanes, may be seen. The photography, needlework, and cooking classes have been well patronised. The cooking, school work, and models classes were judged today. The needlework section will be judged on Monday, and the photography on Wednesday. The entries in all classes are satisfactory.

The .New Zealand Alpine and Eock Garden' Society is staging a rock garden exhibit at the show. The exhibit is under the charge of members of the council. - The exhibit is in no sense a "table model." It occupies a space approximately 50ft square, 35 tons of rocks and 60 yards of soil having been used in its construction, and some very interesting forms of plant life are introduced. Those interested in rock gardening will be welcomed by the members in charge.
