DERBYSHIRE FIELD
GOVERNMENT'S ACTION
TRACK OF AN OIL BELT
Cntted Press Association—By Electrlo Tele, graph—Copyright LONDON, March 23. . The "Daily Express" says that the secret of the Government's haste with the Oil Bill, whieli is to be at once introduced in the House of Commons, is that Government experts a month ago struck oil near Castlcton, Derbyshire. The pressure was strong enough to astonish experts and galvanise the Government into action. The discovery lies in the track of an oil bolt which some scientists believe stretches froih southwest of the Humber across the Pennine chain to the shores of Cardigan Bay. Lead miners in Derbyshire have for years talked about an oil lake beneath old workings. The "Daily Telegraph" says that the Government 's action is due to American syndicates inquiring- into possibilities in the Midlands. Ministers wish to prevent an oil rush similar to those frequently seen in the United States. ■■■ ■
_An Italian mining engineer stated in November that there was enough oil shale near "Weyinouth to supply the whole country with oil and petrol indefinitely.
Oil was produced during the war at Hardstoft, Derbyshire, where a well still averages six barrels of high-grade oil daily. Many experts believe that the Weald area in Kent and Sussex ofters possibilities.
