EASTER EVENTS
CENTRE TOURNAMENT
OLD-TIME REVIVAL
There was. a time—many years ago— when some of the Wellington Bowling Centres-biggest and best tournaments were staged during the Easter holidays. One of the last, if not the last, was that of 1914 in which 0. Porteous cai* ried off the honours in an exceptionally large "field," affording striking evi-' dence of the popularity of those Easter tournaments. Associated with Porteous in that • rink were W. Grenf ell, A. E. Erskine, and W. J. Thompson. It was a rink of some renown, as it was the one which brought Dominion rink championship honours to 'Wellington, for the first time —in. 1914 when the Dominion tournament took place at Dunedin. The revival of the Easter tournaments under the auspices of the Wellington Centre should make a great appeal, but it is unfortunate that on. this occasion there is a clash which must have had a big effect on the entries. The Hutt Valley tournament is also set down for Easter, and this no doubt accounts for the fact that only one rink from the Hutt "Valley—one to be skipped by.Lowry (Petone)—is to participate in the centre's event. The fact that Central (Petone), Eastbourne, Hutt, Johnsonville, Khandallah, Newtown, Upper Hutt, and Woburn are not participating in the centre tourney is disappointing, but it is gratifying to find that the response from other clubs is such'that there will be twelve rinks (one from Masterton) in each of three sections. But for the fact that several rinks from the club are to visit' Blenheim; Newtown no doubt would hava been well represented. THE ENTRANTS. The draw for the centre's- Easter tournament was published in "The' Post" this week. Clubs and skips only were mentioned, and, while, they give some idea of the quality of the entries, the full list of intending participants (with some places in rinks still to be filled) throws more light on the calibre of the rinks. As far as is known, the rinks will be:— Section A. . .'■■■ ..;-' Hataitai.—Josephson, Bennett, : Wellings, Cometti (s). : Lyall Bay.—Williams,, McKenzie, Walker. Hazlewood (s). - .
