"ALL TIME" RANKINGS

.'' All-time rankings are the latest fad to overseas tennis writers, and during the "off" season in the United States controversy has been raging bitterly round the subject. "American Lawn Tennis" has canvassed the views of a few .yeH-known players and critics, and their rankings are appended: ttacoste's ranking.—Tilden,' H. L. Doherty, Cochct, Johnston, Wilding, Borotra, E. F. Doherty, Brookes, Larnecl, W. Benshaw.

Borotra's ranking.—Lacoste, Tilden, Cochet, H Xj. Doherty, Wilding, Brookes, Johnston, W. Renshaw, E. F. Doherty, Lamed.

Maurice Blein's ranking.—Tilden, H. L. Doherty, Cochet, Brookes, Johnston, Wilding, Borotra, Lamed, Vines, W. Renshaw.

,E. 0. Potter's ranking.—Tilden, H. 1*.'.., Doherty, Brookes, Cochet, Johnston, Wilding, Lacoste, Whitman, Borotra, Perry.

P. M. Harry's ranking.—Tilden, Cochet, H. L. Doherty, Wilding, Johnston, Lacoste, Brookes,-W. Renshaw, R. F. Doherty, Sears.

Arnold Herschell's ranking.—Tilden, H. L. Doherty, Wilding, Cochet, Borotra, Brookes, E. F. Doherty, Eiseley, Pirn, Eoper Barrett.

J. P. Allen's ranking.—Tilden, H. L. Doherty, Wilding, ' Cochet, Borotra, Brookes, E. F. Doherty, Eiseley, Pirn, Eoper Barrett.

It is inevitable that there should be a divergence of opinion on such a subject, but the discrepancies in these lists are little less than extraordinary. The opinion seems to be fairly general, however, that Tilden was the "greatest of all time," with H. L. Doherty second. The ranking of Harry, a French critic, is based on»a complicated system of allocation of points for performances in championship and Davis Cup play, and that of Herschell is expressly restricted to players who have had a fairly long career, thereby excluding such men as Crawford, Perry, Austin, and Vines.
