MEAT MARKET
MUTTON PRICES WEAKEN
The Bank of New Zealand, Produce Department, has received the following advice from its London office as at close of business this week:—"The market for wethers is dull and there is little business doing. Larger supplies of ewes have caused prices to weaken. The market for lambs has improved for second quality, firsts remain steady. The demand for beef is affected by low prices of chilled. Wethers, light 4 7-8 dto 5%d per lb, heavy 4%d to 4%d; ewes, 3d to 4%d; lambs, 2's 7 3-8 dto 7 7-Bd, B's 6 7-8 dto 7 l-Bd, 4's 6 5-8 dto 6 7-Bd, seconds 7d to 7%d; ox hinds 2 7-8 d to 3 l-Bd, fores 2d to 2 14 d."
Levin and Co., Ltd., have received the following cable from their London agents, dated March 23:—North Island frozen meat quotations: Down lambs, 28/36U) 7 5-Sd, 30/421b 7%d; crossbred lambs, 28/361b 7'/2d, 36/421b 7 l-8d; second quality lambs, average 30-311b 7 l-8d; wethers, under 481b 5 5-Sd, 48/561b 5%d, 56/641b sd, 64/721b 4%d; ewes, under 481b 4 1-Sd, 48/561b 3 7-Bd, 56/641b 3-5-Bd, 64/721b 3Ud; New. Zealand prime ox beef, 160/2201b, 2 5-Bd. Compared with last week's quotations, lamb, all grades,' l-8d per lb higher; wethers'.V'urider 481b, l-8d per lb lower, and 48/721,b %d per lb lower; ewes, under 641b, 1-8(1' lb .lower, and 64/7211>, Hd per lb lower. The lamb market is firm. Mutton market quiet; prices weakening.'' ~.'..'
