CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

The Wellington .Cricket Association's senior championship is being concluded at the Basin Reserve today, the result- depending mainly upon what happens in the ■Petoue-Kilbirnie match on No. 2' wicket. Wellington, playing Wellington College ; 01d. Boys on No. 1 wicket, had reached a point at stumps last week which made them sure of gaining a five-point win, and this would be good enough to give them the championship should Kilbirnie be beaten on the first innings. The possibility of Petone and Kilbirnie finishing up on equal terms at the head of the championship has been removed, unless the almost impossible happened in the other match. Sad Petone and Kilbirnie divided first place, averages would not have come into the reckoning. Petone, with more outright wins "than'Kilbirnie, would have won the championship. The position for the start of today's play was that Petone wanted an outright win, and any prospect of their getting that would have compelled Wellington to go for major points. Kilbirnie only had to. win, on the first inn-, ings to make sure of .championship honours, as an eight r pointer ,to Wellington would not in that! case: be enough to overtake Kilbirnie. The whole .position was .exceedingly interesting for the final.day of the championship, but in recent seasons this has been the rule rather than the exception. Prior to the results today the championsip points were Kilbirnie 38, Wellington 34, Petone 33, Wellington College Old Boys 23.

At 3 p.m. today Kilbirnie, in reply to Petone's 229, had made 130 for four ■wickets (Doneghue 6, Ward 45, Crook 20 not outj Christophersen 6 not out).

In the other: match, "Wellington's score against Old Boys was 266 for eight wickets (Morgan 72," Monteath 24, Cousins 47).
