SEEKING A SOLUTION

UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM

UNITED ACTION URGED

Unanimous support for the proposal to hold an all-party conference on unemployment was given by the Wellington Inter-Church Committee of Social Belief at a meeting yesterday; The following resolution was carried:— ' The Wellington Inter-Church Committee of Social Belief, having in mind tho danger that unemployment may become a permanent national problem, and, further, the menace to the whole community of so many suffering from continued depression, of their standard of living, and also the social and moral evils bred by hopelessness and despair, and finally, the fact that only in a thoroughgoing application of Christian ideals ana principles can there be any permanent solution of our present distresses, unanimously supports the proposal already made public for holding, an all-party conference in search of a cure for unemployment. The committee further calls on the churches throughout the Dominion to unite in .urging the Government to call such a conference. The question of church representation at such a conference was discussed, and a group representing all the Christian denominations was formed to draw up a statement of Christian principles on which a solution should be sought. The committee has of late considered measures of relief for the autumn, and it lias decided to eontince the present method of.ineeting special eases of need by issuing small grocery orders, with the addition of milk delivered daily, and fuel. Tho matter of winter- relief is to be considered at the end of April. Owmg. to pressure of other duties, the Eev. F. H. Wilkinson, who has acted as convener from the inception of the committee, has resigned that position. Appreciative reference was made to Mr. Wilkinson's valuable work in organising the committee in its early stages and his wise conduct' of its affairs since.
