PAYMENT OF KATES
OVER £400,000 IN HAND
Up to noon today well over £400,000 had been received by the City Rates Office out of a total rate demand of approximately £510,000. The position this year is, if anything, a little better than at tho corresponding dato last year. Yesterday, which was the last day before the imposition of the penalty in respect of the first batch/of rate ,notices issued^ the payments totalled £41,000, a big sum on the face of it but actually . nothing out of tho ordinary, and this morning's mail brought an additional £6500 which had been posted in time to avoid the penalty. Two cashiers were on duty through- i out yesterday, each being assisted by a clerk. Tho day was a long and arduous one,.and with last-minute payments it was nearly midnight before the staff left the office. Suburban ratepayers who have not yet made payment arc advised to look at the dates stamped on their rate notices. Those bearing the date August 28 will carry a 10 per cent, penalty if the rates are not paid before March 17, and those dated August .29 and August 30 will incur the penalty if not paid before Monday, March 19.
