A NEW PLAN
OF WELLINGTON HARBOUR
INTERESTING ALTERATIONS
A new bcrlhage plan, to replace that i issued seven years ago, lias been prepared by tho Wellington Harbour I Board ami, though at iirst glanco the j alterations necessitated by the changes j, brought by the years1 may appear to be 2 insignificant, a closer study reveals soy- * eral interesting new features. The j main purpose of the plan is to give the s new berthing signals, ■which came into i foree at'the beginning of this year, the ' coloured flags and other signals on the plan having been changed in accordance ; with the new system. . , < ■One harbour improvement which, in 1927, belonged to the future and has since become an established fact, is the Jubilee Floating Dock, and in place of the dotted lines previously indicating "Site for proposed floating dock," the dock and its wharf arc now marked in the green colouring by which the ordinary wharves are shown. The three guide dolphins on the southern side of the dock are also indicated. Previously an explosives wharf was shown off the waterfront between the dock site and Kaiwana, but this wharf is missingi from the new plan. Along this waterfront the railway tracks in connection with the Tawa Flat deviation are shown and the platforms of the new railway station are also indicated. Apart from being named, the railway yard on the Thorndon reclamation is left blank-and, incidentally, no overhead bridge is indicated where the proposed road along the Thorndon waterfront crosses the railway line to the Hutt Boad. NOT LYTTELTON FERRY WHARF. An interesting alteration has been made in regard to the naming of the wharf used by the Wellrngton-liytte-l--ton express service steamers. The word "Perry" has been deleted in accordance with the policy adoi>ted last year of removing the possibly^ derogatory term from this service* The Rangatira and her companion ships now berth at the Wellington-Lyttelton Wharf. In their previous plan there were two insets, one showing the Miramar and Burnham wharves, and the other being a "Locality plan of Port Nicholson"; a third has now been added to give a plan of the oil wharf at Point Howard. The locality plan has also been altered and relates to tho "Port of Wellington, "'' giving a comprehensive map of the waterfront from beyond Island Bay to the Pencarrow Heads, instead of only Lambton Harbour and Evans Bay.
