LOWER HUTT BOROUGH
MEETING OF COUNCIL
The monthly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held on Monday. The library committee reported that the library was being increasingly used, and that a report would shortly be forthcoming from Mr. Norrie on the question of improving the facilities. The finance committee reported having given authority for all outstanding rates for 1932-33 to be-sued for. The engineer yas requested to give an estimate for the strengthening, of the fire station. • . Councillor J. Mitchell- protested against 25s per day being claimed by an official while attending a conference. The Mayor explained that the council was bound by an instruction on the question, and Councillor Mitchell gave notice to have the instruction amended. • , In regard to the revaluation of the borough the finance committee reported that officers had been asked to report to the next meeting of the committee on the possibility of making .use of section 5 of the Valuation of Land1 Act Amendment, 1933," with a view to minimising inequalities in rating arising."out of .individual alterations roade_ on^tlje cgvner's/applications. ■_ '•* ■ ■?■■. The reebmmendatiem of the parks committee that the Wellington Ladies' Hockey Association be granted the use of Trafalgar Park for the forthcoming season for £20 was approved. \ >■ It was decided to issue family tickets, J to cost £1 Is each, for admission during the season to Riddiford Baths. "Owing to the cold weather this year the takings at the baths for. the season up to date show a heavy decrease a.3 compared with those of last year. To January, 1933, the figures were £122 14s lOd, while to January. 1934, they were only £93 Is lid. The works committee reported that the medical officer of health was pot satisfied with the present method of refuse disposal and recommended the' "Bradford" system. The committee had replied stat-. ing that the suggestions would be kept in view, and also that in collaboration with the Hutt River Board, arrangements were being made for a site a little to the north of the present tip, which it was hoped would be free from interference and woul.l be better able to be controlled by the council's officers.
