NOTES ON THE PLAY
Petone quickly assumed the lead in their game with Seatoun, the score after eight heads being 10-4. Seatoun could never make iip leeway, arid three 3's on. subsequent heads helped Petone to a comfortable win. Lowry was 4 down on one head, but with a fine delivery changed the position to 3 up. Starting off against Johnsonville with a 3, Thorndon lost the lead temporarily, but never looked back after the seventh head. With 3, 5, and 3on successive heads they drew right away. ■ ' A promising beginning was made by Hutt against Central, but the latter rink responded well and held the lead (7-6) on the ninth. . Hutt thereupon registered a 6, and still Central came back, reducing Hutt's lead to a point at one stage. Hutt, however, finished on in winning vein, and won by a good margin. Fine play by Victoria placed Karori well down for a time, Seolon's running shots being very effective .and Luke's drawing . being . excellent. On . the twelfth head the score was 13-5 in Victoria 's favour, but a remarkable change then took' place, Karori scoring -14 points (3, 3, 5, 3) on the next four heads. On the fifteenth head Gilbert, two down on the board and two down on the head, sent the jack into .the ditch and the measure realised, five counters to Karori. After Karori gained the lead, Victoria retaliated skilfully, Luke drawing two splendid shots on the twentieth head. Victoria wanted two on the last head, but Grant's shot bowl remained undisturbed. Both rinks played well, Littlcjohn in particular doing some fine leading at a critical stage of the game. The Island Bay-Hataitai game had a most sensational ending. Part way through the game Hataitai seemed to be well entrenched, but Prirldle saved his rink splendidly.. Four down on the seventeenth head, as well as being down on the board, Priddle drew the shot and reduced Hataitai's lead to 14-12. With a drive on the twentieth head, Priddle had bad luck in that the kitty sprang forward, to leave Hataitai with the shot, which Shore increased to two. Then followed the exceptional run .of killing. Island Bay wanted 'three on the last head. They had one, which was no good, and a deadly drive burnt the .head. Priddle killed the • head twice subsequently, and then, on the playing of the head a fourth time, he found that one opposing bowl deprived him of three. Another, drive, and out went that bowl. The scores being level (17-17), an extra head was necessary. On this Island Bay's great fight ended unsuccessfully, Hataitai getting home by a- point in one of the most stirring games on record in champion of champions contests.
Sir Theophilus Metcalfe, England, and Lady Metcalfe arrived by the Wanganella from Sydney. They are going to Taupo for the fishing, and will spend the winter in New Zealand. E. Johnston, and Co., auctioneers, will "sell household furnishings at their base- ■ ment mart on Friday at .10.30 a m
