STREET SEALING
LOWER HUTT SEEKS INFORMATION
The Mayor of Lower Hutt (Mr." J. W. Andrews) reported to his ■ council last evening that Councillor G. J. Ashton, the borough engineer (Mr. E. F. Mainland), and himself had spent an interesting day at the. invitation of the Wellington City engineers, inspecting the new method of sealing the subsidiary roads of the city. They had gained much valuable information. . Councillor F. Campbell remarked that an enormous amount of money had beon wasted because the Government had not had the foresight to form a research department which would be able to lay down standard methods of sealing for say first, second, and thirdclass roads. Such information would prevent each local body wasting time and money making its own experiments. The Mayor agreed. Discussing the matter later with a "Post" representative the Mayor said the absence of a sealing plant to deal efficiently with thp economical surfacing of Hutt Valley roads was another glaring instance of the folly of divided control.' Such plant for use in the whole Valley would be an economic proposition, but no one local body could afford it. The council last evening referred to the works committee a petition from residents in Hume Street for the sealing of that street, the Mayor remarking that a large amount of sealing work would probably be provided for in the next year's estimates.
