ALLEGED TAX EVASION
MR. MELLON REPLIES
CRUDE POLITICAL ATTACK
WASHINGTON, March 11. Mr. A. W. Mellon issued a lengthy statement today in answer to the charge of tax evasion by the AttorneyGeneral, Mr. H. S. Cummings. Mr. Mellon characterised the'action as "politics of the crudest -sort," and entered a blanket denial that he had defrauded the Government in any way. He said that he welcomed the bringing up of the issue, which, he hoped, would put an end to the campaign of "character wrecking and abuse," of which, he said, he had been a victim j for many mouths. It was reported yesterday that the Attorney-General had announced that proceedings against a former Secretary of the Treasury, Mr. A. W. Mellon, Mr. James J. Walker r former Mayor of New York, Mr. Thomas Lamont, partner in J. P. Morgan and Company, and Mr. Thomas Sidle, a noted Cleveland lawyer and partner of a former Secretary for War, Mr. N. D. Baker, for alleged' tax evasion, would be presented to grand juries soon. The case against Mr. Mellon, it was understood, had been under investigation for some time.
