NEW PLYMOUTH HAND
FOR OPUNAKE MEETING
(Special from "Hurry On."). NEW PLYMOUTH, March. 12. All-the, New. Plymouth horses in active work -will be competing at Opunake on Saturday. ■ The local, contingent will be a fairly strong one, and a fair share of the stake money should come its way. . As was' generally expected, Leo Colossus yon at Bulls: This three-year-old lias done veil ■ lately and looks like turning out a good sort. He should' be a hard horse to beat on Saturday. ■ Desert Star, a stablemate to Leo Colossus, failed again at Bulls, and he has''his trainer, H. Dulieu, sorely puzzled. He JV doing and' working better than before the. Christmas and New Year meetings, but-his showings with the colours up have been.very mediocre. He is to be given another trial in the Opunake Cup. Adept is doing nicely, and her track efforts ;show that she is-, making steady improvement. Her good second behind Moatba- on tlie second day at New Plymouth was a solid effort/and she would only have to repeat it to be in" the money in even good hack company. Headmistress has been disappointing since, showing promise in the spring, and has not been raced since Hawera. She figures in the hack sprint events at Opunake, her trainer having come to the conclusion that she will be more suited there -than over middle distances. Matorui has gone the right way since his good second to All Spirit at Wanganui. lhis three-year-old possesses a great turn of pace, and has only to settle down to win iv good company. He will probably contest the maiden and one other race at Opunake. The steeplechaser Koyal Reign has joined H. Dulieu's. team. She looks in good order to commence her preparation. She is a fine-fencer, and in. this trainer's hands should be 'a good proposition for minor chases during the winter season. Orapai was eased- up in his work when the open sprint at Opunake was abandoned, but he will be getting, ready for the .taster racing shortly. He will be competing at-Fending, a course where he has raced successfully in the past. In his six starts there he has won three times been second once/ and fourth twice.
