PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL

The Mayor (Mr. D. McKenzie) presided at last evening's meeting of the Petone Borough Council. The Petone Amateur Athletic Cycling Club was granted the use of the Petone Recreation Ground on March 24 in connection with a triangular contest between the Masterton, Olympic, and Petone Athletic Clubs, subject to an arrangement being reached with'the-cricketers. The St. ohn Ambulance Brigade, Petone Division, asked it' it would be possible for the council'to enlarge the ambulance room at the Recreation Ground and also to have .-. window placed in it facing the playing area, as the present accommodation was not large enough for requirements. The matter was referred to the. works committee. A letter was received from Mr. J. Huggan, on behalf of the ratepayers at Korokoro, asking, for permission to use the beach for a carnival at Easter. The idea of the carnival was to raise funds to help the school committee to get proper sanitary arrangements at the school, and also to help the funds- of the Progressive League. The request was referred to the beach and beautifying committee. The Wellington City Council wrote with regard to the maintenance costs of the Hutt River and Waiwhetu Pipe Bridges, and the letter was referred to the finance committee. ■ Giving the reports of the works committee, Councillor E. T. E. Hogg said it had been suggested that intersecting street corners in Cuba Street should be splayed back. The committee thought that where buildings were already erected at corners the corners should be left as they .were, but that in cases where buildingsx were to be erected the corners should be splayed back. The council approved of the recommendation. : The borough engineer (Mr. C. L.'Jackson) reported that building permits to the value of £430 were issued during February. The borough inspector (Mr. W. B. Gough) stated in his report for February that one case of erysipelas and two of scarlet fever had been reported-to-him.
