SWIMMING

LOCAL CHAMPIONS

TITLES DECIDED

The keenness and enthusiasm which characterises competition between the younger swimmers was much in evidence at Te Aro Baths on Saturday afternoon, when the holders of the.Maxwell trophies and the Coltman and Duthie Cups for the ensuing year were decided. The carnival, held by the. Wellington Club, was fairly well attended, chiefly by. parents and friends of the young swimmers In the Duthie Cup race, the Clyde Quay and Scots College teams kept close throut-h most of the distance, until Clyde Quay, drawing away, won the race by ten "yards, ihirty yards separated second and third. The Queen Margaret's College team in the Coltman Cup relay opened up a long lead, which steadily increased. This team won by fully 35 yards, with the third team 20 yards further back. ' Undoubtedly; the finest Taee of the afternoon was that for the boys' Alaswell trophy. No less than ten teams from the various colleges entered, aud the struggle was close all through. Wellington College A won narrowly from St. ijatncks, Silverstream, there being less than a second between the first four to hnish. A' hard battle also developed in the girls _ section between the Wellington bast College A team and Hutt Valley High School Wellington East won hy a yard, with the B team ten yards bank third. ■■ Of the four individual boys' and girls' championships, the primary, schools' 75 yards events were the most striking The girls event was won by B.
