Research Ship's Arrival. According to advico received from Auckland tho Hoyal Research Ship Discovery II has reported by wireless that she expects to reach Auckland tomorrow, When tho Discovery II was last in Dominion waters in 1932 a call was made at Wellington, but on the present trip it is unlikoly that slip will come hore. The. ship is again engaged in ocean sui'vey work and the study of whales, and her present voyage will last about two years, during which she will mako several excursions into Antarctic waters. New Zealand Flax. A 'firm of New Plymouth nurserymen has roceived an order for 40,000 New Zealand flax plants, and has made arrangements with tho owners of a flax plantation at Gordonton, .Waikato, for tho supply of tho flax, states a Hamilton correspondent. A body of workman, is now' engaged in digging and crating two-year-old plants, which will bo shipped from Auckland on February 3. If the shipment proves successful a further order for 100,000 plants is expected to.bo received from Japan, An Unusual Passenger. A female polar bear, which, was shipped to tho Adelaido Zoo from Auckland, made an'uneventful voyago in the Monowai. Tho animal was loaded on to tho Monowai last Thursday, just before she sailed. For several days it had been enclosed in tho strong wooden box in which it was to make tho journey, so that it -would becomo accustomed to its surroundings. Tho box was lifted by a crane directly on to the deck, whero it was kept during tho voyage. Tho bear was a little re&tivo at first, but soon quietened down. Tho Monowai arrived at Sydney yesterday. New Ship Reaches Dominion. Tho Canterbury Steam Shipping Company's new coastal motor-ship arrived at Dunedin yesterday on her maiden trip from Groat Britain. Tho 600-ton vessel left Glasgow last November 18 and travelled via Capo Town and Australia, undor the command of Captain J. B. Allsop. From Dunedin she will go to Lyttclton to complete tho discharge of her general cargo from South Africa, and she may be docked before she begins running between Wanganui, Wellington, and South Island ports.
