When the Australians fancy anything they rap in their bids quick and lively, whereas New Zealand bidders Me slow in comparison, and the.bids have to be extracted after they appear to have deliberated on the value of each offer. The ciuickfire methods of the Australians create the impression that they are determined to have the lot on offer and so silence the opposition. This appeared to bo the ease at this year's sale, and in.cnn'Beqnende some of tho youngsters sbli3 at well below their full value. The Anstraliana can, of course, well afford to pay more for a yearling than.a New Zealand' owner, as they have a much better market to exploit when they secure something out of the ordinary. 'They also leai-n to bid i quicker in Australia than they do here owing to the great length of their catalogues, but in any casovit is to be hoped that their wise and plucky bidding will again bear good fruit and bring them back again. : QUESTION OF~PASTURAGE It has been said that "man is .what he eats.". This; applies still more to tho thoroughbred horee." Many years ago it was recognised that you simply cannot raise good hVorses, sound in limb, wind, and constitution, on bad coimtry. In discussing tho vital importance of pasturage a London writer says:— "It is the stuff in the grass..which matters, not the juggling with systems of breeding, which is ever a bit of a toss-up, and even something more if Lord Eaglan is right. His lordship, ns we know, has said that most pedigrees are fakes; but, fakes or not, where the thoroughbred horse is concerned, it is the phosphates in the grass which count; The grazing in this country (England) and Ireland is superior to that in Prance or in other Continental countries, and the fact that wo produce a finer stamp of animal than they do is traceable to this fact, and most probably to no other. In Australia the phosphates are pretty nearly as good as our own. That country never could have deserved' to he called 'norsetraylia' if it had not been a land peculiarly suited to breeding the horse." ' • • Sir John Beverly Robinson, Bart., holder of one of Canada's! new hereditary titles, died recently on his farm at Burk's Palls, Ontario, at tho age of 84. He was the great-gratidson of the first baronet, who fought under Sir Isaac Brock at Queenston Heights in the war with the United States 120 years' ago. The fourth baronet in an effort to recoup his declining fortunes spent his old age in searching for a vein of gold he beiiev.edran through his* farm. He is succeeded in the title by a son of, the sanio muc.
