WEATHER FORECAST
OVERCAST AND WET
Although a gradual improvement should take place, the weather is still likely to be dull and rainy, according to the weather forecast issued.at noon today. The forecast is for east t,o north-east winds, strong in' the Cook Strait area and on the east coast of the -North Island, but elsewhere moderate. Tho weather is expected to be cloudy .to overcast south of Auckland and north of Canterbury with light rain, in many. places, but an improvement should take place gradually. In other parts fair to fine weather is indicated. Temperatures- will be cool. »Tho anticyclone which, when it passed yesterday just south of the Domonion was of only • slight intensity, was centred this morning between the South Island and Chatham Island and pressure in that neighbourhood was over 30.3;, inches. The weather for some time has been hazy or misty or sultry with a good deal of cloud, and yesterday there were some isolated rains. This morning a definite cool change had taken place and there seems to be a departure from the unusual conditions of last week which were associated with the severe heat wave in Australia. At 9 a.m. rain was falling at many places south of Auckland in the North Island and in the northern and eastern portions of the South Island. Some heavy falls have occurred in South Taranaki and about Cook Strait, Cape Egmont reporting 1.23 inches, Farewell Spit 0.86 inches, and Stephens Island 0.57 inches. The winds yesterday wore light and variable, but this morning strong easterlies or south-easterlies blew in the Cook Strait area and northwards as far as East Cape. In other parts moderate north-easterlies predominated. ■■.-.., Auckland had fine warm and sultry weather during the weekend. A light breeze blew from between west' and south, but this morning there was a change to the north. On Saturday the weather was cloudy but overcast and hazy at Wellington with a light westerly breeze. In tho afternoon light rain fell, the total being 0.02 inches. ■ During, yesterday it was again cloudy, hazy, and at times threatening, but' no rain fe11... Tho breeze had turned to tho south-south-east. This morning light rain set in about 5.30 a.m), and by 9 a.m. 0.12 inches had fallen. The wind had become more easterly and had freshened considerably. . Warm and sultry conditions prevailed throughout Saturday and yesterday, but this morning, it was cooler. Christchurch had dull weather during most of tho weekend with a fresh to strong north-easterly brcezo during the day time, and moderate temperatures. Yesterday afternoon a light drizzling rain set in and still' continued this morning, the total being 0.08 inches. . ■ Saturday was fine and sunny in Dunediu, but yesterday was more cloudy. A south-westerly breeze prevailed, but this morning it had changed to the north-east and light rain had fallen in tho early hours.
