MUST HAVE BOTH
PRIMARY AND SECONDARY
INDUSTRIES
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
DTJNEDIN, January 26.
After referring to. measures' which had been adopted in Grea'- Britain to afford relief to agricultural industry by protection, the Prime Minister stated at the Manufacturers' Association luncheon that, this, together with what was being done in such countries as Germany and France, "showed that throughout the world Governments were realising the necessity for doing something to assist their industries.. , His own .feeling, was that if industry could be run without assistance that was all to the good, but' he realised that under the; present difficult conditions, something had;to be done to give assistance to the country's industries.
After, his inspection of some of, the factories-in Dunedin that morning ho was greatly impressed with their efficiency and the sound reliable articles which they produced. He. was pleased to see that things were so" busy, for it was generally realised that the problem . of...unemployment ■ was->.one■ of the most difficult with which the ■ whole world was faced. ,
I'1- Mr. Forbes' said , that . cpntroyersy sometimes took . place between those interested in primary and secondary industries. It would be admitted that both industries must exist in the country. Any person who held the beilief that'a country like New Zealand nlust confine its attention to one class of industry would show that he, had failed to make a study of the condition of affairs in other countries. In New Zealand a number of splendid industries had been built up. He was pleased to see how they 1 were progressing and to know that they were turning out first-class articles for public use and consumption. He would not hesitate to say that the production from our factories 'would stand comparison with production from the factories of any other [country in the world. . . • •
