"CHILD O' SUMMER"

(Original.)! '.. ••. 'Twas the "last eve of spring when, a slim form slipped out of the golden, gates of Heaven and ran lightly flown the star-powdered stairway of the sky; on to the earth. Tho open spaces in the woods where .she lauded were dreamy with dew and moonshine and blue shadows. A little wind wag play* ing in the trees, making the big pines breathe like harps, and she laughed for joy. A sweet laughter like the ringing of bluebells on a summer morn. ■ As she passed in and out the velvety pine shadows, the birds twittered drowsily in their dreams, the wild honeysuckle* spilled perfume into the dusk,'and the sweet brier-roses'opened blushing petals to her. -The little night animals, watching with starry eyes, whispered, " JTis Child 0' Summer," and she laughed again, and' s^ed on, t« where the moonlight spilled shadows of gold on the stream at tho edge of the forest. Here she kneeled to drink "of its cool waters, and where she kaelt buttercups awoke. Then on and on she danced across the land, till everywhere showed summer's joy. When morning light touched the) clouds with rose and gold,l a sun- rayfound her sleeping in a cool green dell, her sunny cuds clustered round her head, like leaves cradling a rose i» dusky green. "-' - . "Sweet Summer has come," laughid the children that morning. "See, .th» buttercups are out, and the britr-rdM*,. too." -. . -•-. "CHILD 0' HAPPINESS".(M); »
