ENGINE REFINEMENT

MORE POWER, LESS WEIGHT

In.addition, to such major changes as independent, front-wheel -suspension and extensive-streanilinirig, the cars of 193-1 as shown in New ,York ineor-

porate a number of improvements and refinements which, if ..of-a less radical character, are none the less significant and useful. , '■'.'■..-

Much attention has been devoted to making the engines more efficient and moro. powerful. Many of them have greater horse-power than their predecessors, the increase being obtained in most cases without enlarging the bore and stroke of the cylinders .or the piston displacement. Aluminium alloy cylinder heads for higher compression, together with lighter pistons and connecting rods, are designed to give greater speed and; acceleration, while keeping fuel consumption ; and carbon deposit to a,minimum. Engine speeds as high as. 3800 and 400Q . revolutions per minute are not uncommon - among the hew motors, contrasting with 3600 r.p.m. used in a few cars last year. In' addition, each-horse-power has less weight to propel. Improvements in engine lubrication are also in. evidence, some models making provision for cooling or warming the oil for the .best operating tempera-_ ture. Refinements have also been made in carburettors, valves, intake manifolds, and engine mountings. _The general claim is made that the engines this year require less attention and run more smoothly and economically than any previously developed.
