PREVALENCE OF CORSE FIRES

The prevalence of gorse fires in the city and surrounding districts was commented upon by. Mr. Marcus Marks at.the meeting of the, Wellington Fire Board today. He described it as a curse. ..-.....'.■■

Mr. Marks referred to the fires that had occurred on the eastern side of the harbour, and mentioned in particular the danger of allowing gorse to grow and dry in the vicinity of the oil tanks near Seaview Road. In his opinion great neglect was being shown in permitting gorse to grow in certain parts) of the city, and its surroundings. Mr;t Edwards said the City Council had authority to compel people to keep their land free frbm gorse.

Mr. S. S. Dean- suggested that the City Council was not keeping the gorse down' on. some of its. own property. He knew of an area where the gorse was beings cut down, but not. grubbed out. Mr. Marks: These gorse fires two.or three1 times a day at this time, of the year, are a pretty costly business. .
