JUST VANDALISM

, Wellington is fortunate in having in its' own boundaries and in the neighbouring suburbs some valuable reserved areas of native bush. Otari Scenic Reserve (Wadestown), Williams Park (tfay's Bayj, Onslow Park and the reserves under the control of the Eastbourne Borough Council are all accessible to bus travellers or walkers. Generally the public have respected these reserves and there have been few complaints of wilful damage or careless fire-raising. But some persons, probably hot many, are doing their worst to give the public a bad name at Eastbourne. The Borough Council, to check damage, has posted notices, and these notices have been torn down and defaced. This is plain and stupid vandalism, without reason or excuse. One can" understand the plant collector, who has a student interest. One may even make some sort of excuse for the person who, seeing beautiful ferns or flowers, is tempted to pick them. But the I vandal who just hacks at things and tears down warning notices reveals nothing but barbarism. For such there should be no leniency. As the Eastbourne Borough cannot have inspectors everywhere, it rests with those who do value their own property to discover and report the depredations of those who. value nothing.
