RACING AT TAKAPUNA

TOMORROW'S OPENING DAY

HORSES IN LIKELY FORM

(Special from "Early Bird.") V ; ,'AUCKLAND, This Day. The racing at the opening tomorrow of the; Takapuna Jockey Club's Summer Meeting eliou'ld'be quite interesting, although in some of-the i hack races the fields will be on. the staall side. Totalisator betting will be conducted under the win-and-place system. ■■ A dozen remain in the Takapuna Cup, and this should be a good race, for with a couple of exceptions the horses engaged have shown form of recent weeks. The best half-dozen may comprise Master Brierly, Master Norval, Mungatoon,l Royal Artist, Alloy, and Gay Marigold. Speedmint is omitted, although if she has freshened up she wiil be good enough to be in at the finish.. Another good field will be seen out in the Zealandia Handicap, but on the figures there is one horse outstanding, and this is Sinking Fund. He won two races in the one afternoon at his last appearance on this track, seven weeks back, and he followed this up £y running prominently in the big sprints at Ellerslie. He is in tomorrow with a very handy impost, and it will be surprising if he fails. Among his most formidable opponents will be Jonathan, Karangapai, Rereatu, and Exaggeration. The class in the Calliope Handicap is moderate, and the best seem to be Royal Appellant, Sirona, High Crest, and Kelly, with ther first-named having an excellent chance of breaking his sequence-of second placings. Of the eight left in the hack classic, the Wynyard Plate,' Boughal and Star Artist > will command most support, and the latter will take a lot of beating. Boughal's defeat at Pukekohe last week caused him to lose friends, but it is difficult to. see him conceding Star Artist 91b at any time. Form horses for, tomorrow are the fol°K l.pf— Trial Stakes: Killadar. Teddy's Boy, and Brown Lap. 12.42. —Orewa Highweight: United and Alpinus.
