A more cheerful review of .the basic industries of North England than has been possible for several years was given by Mr. Allan Paton, chairman, to shareholders of Martin's Bank at Liverpool today.
Ho summarised the outlook as follows: —Cotton, more' hopeful; shipbuilding, better output assured; iron and steel, steady improvement; engineering, great activity; agriculture, decided -change in outlook; wool and woollens, decided chango in outlook.
To the gain in these directions, said Mr. Paton, were to be added the chceriiig statements concerning the national revenue and the renewed confidence in sterling. Ho said that Great Britain's recovery was proceeding on normal lines and expressed the view that her policy of concentrating on lower rates of interest had had good effects on industry:
