DEPRESSION PASSES

SOUTHERLY CHANGE DUE

■ One westerly depression passed away eastward yesterday, but anothcr'i&nd a more' vigorous one soon approached these shores from the southern part, o£ the Tasman Sea. This had crossed Southland by 9 a.m. today. Hence, as a moderate anticyclone is still lying to the north of Now Zealand, the weather forecast issued at noon today is for strong westerly to north-westerly winds, which at times will reach gale force. Winds, however, will shortly back to the west, and there toll be a changeto southerlies within 24 to 36 hours. Tho weather will be cloudy to overcast and misty, with rain in districts with a westerly aspect. Tho rain will «xtcnd later to eastern districts and temperatures will gradually, become, cooler. . ' Strong and squally westerly to. northwesterly winds prevailed yesterday,-gale force being reached *in mayy places. Rain has fallen in high country and. in districts with a westerly aspect, but so far few falls have been heavy.' "Vsry little rain has fallen in eastern districts. Temperatures have been -warm, but have already, begun to fall iusouthern districts.

Auckland had a squally westerly wind and showery weather both, yesterday and last night. The weather in Wellington was fair and warm, with a fre&h north-westerly wind. This became strong and squally during tho night, and a gust with a velocity of 49 miles an hour was recorded at 9.25 a.m. today. At 6.25 a.m. light rain began to fall, and. the ■weather since then has been foggy at times with intermittent rain. •

At 10 a.m. yesterday the north-west-erly wind in Christchurch changed to a north-easterly, thus saving the day from being excessively hot. It was, however, warm and sunny, but the night was dull, although, mild. At 3 a.m. today the wind changed to the north-west again, and there was a brief shower. . .

Dunedin had' fino and sunny weather with a light northerly breeze. The northerly wind was stronger this morning and tho weather was overcast.
