THE VEGETABLE GARDEN. Plant out leeks, celery, cabbages, cauliflowers, and other - winter greens. Make further sowings of peas, beanf, carrots, turnips, and swedes. Sow lettuces at fortnightly intervals. , Celery, pumpkins, marrows, etc., require plenty of water. Give a good soaking once a week rather than dribbles every day. Bomovo flower heads from rhubarb as they appear. A good mulch of manure will build up the crowns for next season's .crop. ■■ Thin out seedling crops, keep the soil loose and water, wheninecessary. • \ ' ' ' THE FLOWER GARDEN. Remove spent annuals and replaco with others for autumn flowering, after having dug and enriched the ground. ~, ■ % Remove all dead blooms from carnations and fork over the' ground .'.round, the plants. A littlo bonedust pricked in will be of advantage. Plant out zinnias, salvias, phlox, etc., for lato blooming. Attend to tho staking and tying of all tall-growing plants. ' Chrysanthemums and dahlias particularly requiro attention in 'this direction. ■ • . ' Give dahlias a good soaking of water once a week. Thin out the growths of Michaelmas daisies. Five or six 'shoots 1 from each stool is ample. Cuttings of hydrangeas may bu put in. Shade the cuttings and keep the soil moist. Cuttings of geraniums and pelagoniums may als>o be put in when the wood is sufficiently matured. Complete the lifting of bulbs where this is necessary. Fork over rose beds, cutting off any dead flowers and seed pods ' from tho bushes.
