SERIOUS CHARGES

Two charges of unlawful carnal knowledge were made against Byron Maurice Bartley, aged 24, a taxi driver, before Mr. E. Page, S.M. in the Magistrate's Court today. After the hearing of the evidence for the prosecution, during which the court was cleared, the accused pleaded not guilty and was committed to th-o Supreme Court for trial. Bail was allowed in his own bond of £50 on condition that he reports weekly to the police. Counsel for Bartley, Mr. A. G. Todd, applied unsuccessfully for an order suppressing the accused's name.
