THE MENACE IN AFRICA

PROTECTION OF WILD LiFF -

LONDON CONFERENCE ;

United Press Association—By Electric Tel«« graph—Copyright. (Received November 1, 2 p.m.) LONDON, October 31. Fourteen countries were represented at an international conference to consider means for preserving and pro* tecting the flora and fauna v of Africa. Lord Plymouth, Under-Secretary for tha Colonies, emphasised the need for new methods of control and preventing tha indiscriminate .destruction, of. wild life. The work of the conference might well afford a basis for the protection of nature in other parts of the world; Lord Onslow detailed some articles in a draft convention prepared by tho British Government, with special reference to the constitution of national parks and reserves. The English-speaking representativeof Ethiopia, a picturesque figure, said that Ethiopia intended to deal with, rhotor-car hunters who dashed . about shooting herds and .. scattering them, but-it would be more difficult to legislate regarding the modern peril of aircraft, the vnoise' of which scar"es wild beasts, causing much damage. "Professional big game hunters, poachers, and amateur sportsmen, all threaten the gradual extinction of Africa's wild game," said Mr. Te Water/the South. African High Commissioner. '
