BRIGADE GROWING

The annual report of the ChapterGeneral of the Venerable Order of St. John shows that the St. John Ambulance Brigade at Home has made progress during the year both in the number of new divisions and in the total personnel. There has "been a very large increase in the number of cadets. This is considered particularly gratifying, as .the more that the youth of the country can be got interested in the movement the more is future strength assured. The actual strength during the year in new divisions was 62 amhulance, 28 nursing, 38 cadet ambulance, and 15 cadet nursing divisions, a total of 143 new units: The strength of the brigade at the end of the year was 1314 ambulance and 609 nursing divisions, with a total personnel of 58,090. The cadet division totalled 301 boys and 140 girls, with a membership of 9097. . Remark is made upon the ever-increas-ing service •which is being rendered to the public by the self-sacrificing work of the members of the brigade^ During the year 460,253' cases: of accident and sudden illness were recorded as having been attended to by members, compared with 386,283 for the previous year. Therfe were 25,279 attendances of one hour or more at civil hospitals, clinics, and welfare centres, undertaken by members of nursing divisions, compared with1 13,095 for the year previous. Two hundred and forty-seven motor ambulances were operated by corps and divisions, compared • with 216 in the preceding year. These ambulances carried 74,613 patients, with a milage of 783,788.
