CANNED CHICKEN
After spending £20,000 on' research and'machinery, Mr. W. B. C.. Ashby, of Ightham (Kent), lias succeeded in canning roast cbicken. It is expected that 2,000,000 canned roast chickens will be marketed next year—-some in America, whero many similar 'experiments liiive fiiiled. Mr. Ashby told the "Sunday Express": "I tried-method after method. First, ordinary roasting. That simply produced a skeleton and flesh at the bottom of the can..■■■'l tried grilling. No good! Then I tried cooking at 1200clcg F. The birds came out covered with, black blisters... I went on, using thousands of chickens and spending £20,000 before I found that by introducing;' a tasteless Vegetable medium, which., afterwards evaporated, I had achieved my ambition. Sometimes fumes were generated from, the vegetable medium. The.v the machinery had to bo stopped and cleaned—at £50 a time. More research, until I discovered the cause and removed it."
