GIFT OF RADIO

UPPER HUTT ORPHANAGE

Excitement ran high among the hundreds of little children at St. Joseph's Orphanage, Upper Hutt, on Sunday, when they were given a wonderful afternoon by a party of entertainers from town, ; which included members of the "Variety Vagabonds" troupe, under Mr. M. Hawken." The waiting children grouped on either side of the main drive, cheered lustily as the procession of cars entered the pretty grounds. "Charlie" tho clown was the chief centre of attraction, arid another was his mother, who was specially welcomed. . The distribution of a plentiful supply of sweets and confectionery novelties was followed by an artistic concert, comprising duets, • songSj humorous monologues, and fancy dances, all conchiding with enthusiastic vocal contests and part .songs —girls versus boys, special prizes being awarded to each section and to tho baby, singers. . From tho platform, the convener briefly introduced Mr. O'Leary and friends, whoso first memorable visit had culminated in the providing and installing of an up-to-date electric radio, which was then officially handed over, amid acclamation, to the institution. Mr. Lavin conveyed the grateful thanks of the Eevercned Mother and .Sisters. .... Mi. Lavin also expressed thanks to the car owners for their willing, and appreciated service, and on" behalf of "Charlie" (Mr. Lansdowne), to the miuiy generous waterside friends who |'subscribed twelve shillings for: the purchase of sweets, etc., for the afternoon function. The party then adjourned to the glassed-in refectory, where a dainty tea was served by the Eevercned Mother .and Sisters, the tables being decorated with tall vases of spring blooms and wattle, and with bowls of beautiful arum lilies here and there.
