DISPLAY OF WORK

PETONE TECHNICAL COLLEGE

A demonstration of the value of technical education was given in tho display of work at the Petone Memorial Technical College on Friday. The exhibition was most creditable to both teachers and students. In the evening tho whole of tho buildings were thrown open to the public aud large numbers look advantage of the occasion to see the students at their work. In the workshops proper examples of metal work were shown, including accurately made engineering tools. There were also examples of plumbing, turning, and smith's work. In the woodwork vooin were shown the frames of model houses, and displays of cabinetmaker's art were to be seen. . The walls of the hall were covered with engineering architectural drawings. The work of the agricultural students was seen in drawings of model piggeries and dairies, in the metal work room, and in farming tools. ■ In the old building and its annexes were displayed the work of the home science, commercial, art, and dressmaking classes. ' In one of the rooms visitors' were entertained with a- programme presented by t.he students, a feature being a mannequin parade. The work in the commercial room shows that attention is being given to very practical subjects such as instruction in the { filling-in of income tax forms. There | were diagrams of office organisation and samples of all kinds of business documents, including samples of bookkeeping ior small and large businesses. Commercial art was shown in samples of poster work and advertising design. In the art room were excellent freehand drawings, all from models. Applied art was represented by turned woodeu platters decorated with Maori designs, book covers, etc. The home science department showed I'rocks, underclothing, children's garments made from old material, art needlework ;ind millinery, .while on the cookery side i there were household budgets and samples j of foods ' showing their body-building values. The nursing side was represented by Red Cross beds, etc. The college caters for the needs of uost■prirnary pupils from .Petone to Upper Kutt, including the eastern bays, and the I'act that its students, even in. these times of depression, are finding ready avenues j of employment is evidence of the excellence of the education given. .
